Machine Guarding

Machines that are not properly safeguarded can cause serious injury, including eye injuries, blindness, and even crushed or severed fingers, hands, and arms. According to the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), “Approximately one-half of all amputations occur in the manufacturing sector, while the remaining amputations are distributed among industry divisions including construction, wholesale trade, retail trade, services, etc.” If you work in any of these industries, you should be aware of the risk improper machine guarding poses to your health and safety.

Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:

• Define mechanical hazards associated with machinery use
• Identify the requirements of a machine safeguard
• Identify methods for machine guarding and specific types of machine safeguards
• Identify the rights and responsibilities of an employee when working around guarded machinery, including PPE use and training requirements
